Artists Statement:

Victoria Heryet was born in Yorkshire, England and moved to Canada at the age of fourteen. She received a Diploma in Graphic Design from the Kootenay School of Art. However, after several years of working as a graphic artist for various newspapers and magazines, Victoria's interests turned toward painting and illustration. Victoria's works also include many commissions. She specializes in watercolour and pen and ink paintings of homes and pets. Victoria's childrens' book illustrations have been published in Japan and her work has been accepted in juried shows in Canada and internationally. Victoria works out of her home studio in Ladner. “Initially, because of my experimental nature, I am drawn to an image by the challenge of recreating the texture, contrast and the light. Each image lends itself to a particular medium. In acrylic, a diffused light or a rich texture is achieved by layering multiple thin washes of colour. In watercolour I prefer to render the subject with bright colours and contrast. I think it is important to review and reflect on what we consciously and unconsciously achieve in our art. Throughout my work I endeavour to show a human element. My aim is to illustrate a moment in someone’s life by candidly capturing their surroundings on paper or canvas. Painting allows me a certain intimacy with each subject. The images raise many questions for me, and may also for the viewer…Who are these people?…What is going on behind the scenes? Every picture tells a story – I’ll let you draw your own conclusions."
